Hair loss is one of the most distressing symptoms of hypothyroidism, affecting both men and women. The good news? In most cases, thyroid-related hair loss can be reversed with proper treatment and care. Let’s explore the science behind this connection and discover evidence-based solutions for hair regrowth.
Understanding the Thyroid-Hair Connection
Your thyroid hormones play a crucial role in hair follicle development and cycling. When your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), it can:
- Disrupt your hair’s natural growth cycle
- Force more hair follicles into the “resting” phase
- Slow down the rate of hair regrowth
- Affect the quality and strength of new hair
How to Identify Hypothyroid Hair Loss
Thyroid-related hair loss typically has specific characteristics:
- Diffuse thinning across the scalp rather than patches
- Hair feels dry, brittle, and breaks easily
- Loss of the outer third of eyebrows (a classic thyroid sign)
- Changes in hair texture
- Overall lacklustre appearance
The Science of Reversing Thyroid Hair Loss
1. Optimize Thyroid Treatment
The foundation of hair recovery is getting your thyroid levels right:
- Work with your healthcare provider to adjust your medications (if necessary)
- Aim for optimal TSH levels (many experts suggest between 1-2 mIU/L)
- Monitor Free T3 and Free T4 levels
- Be patient – it may take 3-6 months to see improvement
2. Address Nutrient Deficiencies
Several nutrients are crucial for both thyroid function and hair growth:
Essential Nutrients:
- Ferritin (levels shouldn’t be under 50 ng/mL) – the circulation of iron is crucial rather than just adding more iron supplements. I discuss this in my free Thyroid Workshop, which you can check out here.
- Vitamin D (optimal levels 50-80 ng/mL)
- B12 (optimal levels > 500 pg/mL)
- Zinc (crucial for thyroid hormone conversion) – a good indicator of low zinc levels is when alk phosphatase on your bloodwork is below 70IU/L
- Selenium (supports thyroid function) – You would want to aim for 200mcg of selenomethionine.
Practical Steps for Hair Recovery
Immediate Actions:
1. Get Comprehensive Testing
- Thyroid panel (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies – TPOab and thyroglobulin antibodies)
- Iron, including ferritin
- Vitamin D levels
- B12
- Zinc (which you can see through low alk phosphatase levels) and selenium levels (which is apparent if free T3 is low and reverse T3 is high)
2. Optimize Your Diet
- Include protein-rich foods (you need at minimum 100g daily)
- Eat plenty of nutrient-dense vegetables (cooking them can help if you have low stomach acid and suffer from bloating)
- Consider fats like organic olive oil, tallow, coconut and organic, grass-fed butter
- Include sea vegetables for natural iodine. Please be careful if you have Hashimoto’s, as you should monitor your bloodwork every six months to see if you’re consuming iodine-rich foods.
3. Hair Care Practices
- Believe it or not, I’m a fan of sulphate-containing shampoos. While this may not be an option if you have scalp psoriasis (because it can be too drying), the sulphates help to thoroughly clean the scalp, which we need to ensure the hair follicles aren’t clogged!
- Don’t delay your hair washing! This is a huge myth as it can clog hair follicles. You should be washing your hair daily, if not every other day.
- Avoid heat styling when possible.
- Be gentle with wet hair! Your hair is most fragile when it’s wet.
- Scalp massage (on dry hair only)
- Consider a silk pillowcase and a hair bonnet to reduce friction
Long-term Strategy:
1. Stress Management
- Practice regular stress reduction
- Get 8-9 hours of sleep! We need more sleep than men!
- Consider meditation and breathwork
- Consider yoga nidra breaks (where you listen to a recording and rejuvenate). This is used extensively for PTSD and a 20min recording is even more relaxing than sleep itself!
2. Supplementation
- Desiccated liver supplements (if ferritin is low) – this is a rich form of copper needed for the circulation of iron. But this is only a piece of the puzzle, so check out my free workshop.
- Vitamin D+K – check your levels and work with a practitioner to assess the correct dose for you.
- B-complex vitamins (I love Thiactive from Objective Nutrients) – always take these with food.
- Collagen or biotin supplements
Timeline for Recovery
Understanding the hair growth cycle is crucial for setting realistic expectations:
Months 0-3: Optimization of thyroid levels
Months 3-6: Reduction in hair shedding
Months 6-12: Noticeable new growth
Months 12-18: Significant improvement in hair density
When to Seek Additional Help
Consider working with us in our private clinic if you’re looking for 1:1 support
- Hair loss continues despite optimal thyroid levels
- You notice patches of complete hair loss
- There’s scalp irritation or inflammation
- You have a family history of autoimmune hair loss
The Bottom Line
Hypothyroid hair loss is reversible in most cases, but it requires:
- Patience and consistency
- Proper thyroid treatment
- Attention to nutrition
- Good hair care practices
Remember that everyone’s recovery journey is different. While some people may see improvements within a few months, others might need more time. The key is to stay consistent with your plan and maintain open communication with your healthcare providers.
Tips for Success
- Keep a symptom diary
- Take “before” photos to track progress
- Be patient with the process
- Focus on overall health, not just hair growth, because hair loss is not a root-cause issue; it’s a symptom only.
- Stay consistent with your plan.
Success Story – Eleni P.
In the Butterfly Effect, my eight-week transformative program, we work with women through a hand-held approach and addressing hair loss is one of the many areas covered! We aim to help you gain more confidence and start doing a double take in the mirror! Not convinced? Check out Eleni’s success. In her case, her hair loss was a result of stress (so building a strong foundation was vital) and nutrient deficiencies caused by pathogenic activity. With consistent work and self-care, her results have been astounding!
